I know I said I wouldn't, but I lied changed my mind. I started a new blog. But I didn't completely start from scratch. I imported a lot of my posts from here to there since I am still going to be writing about being more frugal and natural minded. But this new blog will allow me to write about much more than that and not feel that I am being a hypocrite if I write about something NOT green and thrifty. Plus I have changed my views on many things over the past few months. While I am not ready to write about those changes and the reasons just yet, I am sure I will at some point. So if you want to keep up with what is going on around our house and maybe learn about my changing views, be sure to follow along with us at My Spirited Adventure.

This is another thing that our mamas probably fussed at us about as kids. But a simple measure we can all take to save our precious resources I like long, hot showers. I admit it. But I do try to make a conscious effort to only stay in there as long as I need to, which isn't very long some days since I don't wash my hair everyday.

Some people take a shower in which they wet themselves, turn off the water, lather up, turn on the water to rinse, and then do the same thing to wash their hair. It has a name, but I can't remember it. But it doesn't matter because I'm certainly not going to do it. I love nice hot showers. But I do try to limit my time in them.

Why limit shower time you ask? Because it saves gallons of water! According to Ecomii, "cutting a 15 minute shower to 12 minutes can save 105 gallons of water per week." Wow! This helps the earth tremendously since fresh water is in such demand and it also saves us money as well. Why that might not seem like much when you are paying pennies per gallon for water, it really adds up!

Don't try to give them too many responsibilities or explain things too much to them. What if the problem isn't that we are expecting too much from our children, but rather too little.

As I was taking a shower this morning, the kid came in the bathroom and told me he had to go pee. Of course let me tell you that the kid is now 2.5 but is very strong-willed and is not going to use the potty unless he feels like it. Which is never. Though he does like to sit on the toilet and "read" magazines like daddy. And the bathroom that I was taking a shower in doesn't have a working toilet right now. So I had two choices. I could climb out of my nice warm shower to run the kid to the other bathroom which would result in him sitting on the toilet, pushing his penis down, nothing coming out, him getting bored and jumping off the toilet, then him peeing on the floor two minutes later. Or I could pull him in the shower with me and he could just pee in the water and it would go down the drain (what? pee is sterile).

Then a lightbulb went off and I grabbed the metal bowl out of the tub (he likes to make cakes when he is taking his bath) and told him to pee in that. He of course proceeded to sit down on the floor and try to figure out how he was going to pee in the bowl. So I told him to stand up and hold his penis like daddy and pee in the bowl. After three attempts to push the pee out, he finally did it. And might I add that he has pretty good aim.

He was so proud of himself and I was so proud of him! Why had I not tried getting him to pee standing up before? Because everyone says that that is messy and little boys can't aim and I would end up with pee all over my bathroom. And I barely clean my bathroom as it is, I don't need pee on the walls.

So what does this silly story of penises and pee have to do with expecting too little? Well, nobody expects little boys to be able to aim, so I listened to them and have been making my son sit because I didn't expect much out of him. Today he showed me that I was wrong. Actually, he likes showing me that I am wrong. Whenever I tell him to let me do something because I know he can't (I mean, I don't literally say "you can't do it"), he says "No! Yeah-Ye!" (Yeah-Ye is how he says his name, btw) and then he does it.

So perhaps instead of lowering the bar for our young children, we should raise it up a little higher?
They offer a great selection on all-natural and organic products. Their products range from vitamins and supplents to food to cleaning products and everything in between. And their prices are great! Shipping is a flat $4.99 up to $49...then it is free.
Thanks to my BFF (you know, the on who doesn't know I exist) Laura at Heavenly Homemakers, I learned about a great deal. When you sign up for their rewards program through this link, you get a free $10 credit! Then if you refer your friends, who also get $10, you get another $10 when they complete their first purchase! Score!

See, I started to feel like I was moving away from the original intent of my blog. I also decided I wanted to make this blog a little more about my whole life instead of it being focused on green living on a budget. But the idea of starting a new blog over from scratch was intimidating. Posts to write. People to force to read. Organizing to do. Too much work.

So I figured I would come back to you guys (you are still there, right?). My posts will just be a little broader (and cuter since kids' pictures will be involved...see below). The name still fits, though. I mean, I still live a thrifty life and I still try to live a little green. And I'm still lazy...though I guess that isn't part of my blog name. Though it should be. Maybe I'll add that in when I finally get around to changing the about me and about this blog. Now for the cuteness:
Picking blueberries is a slow process, but organic blueberries for $1.25 a pound? I'll deal with it! I forgot how delicious fresh blueberries are since it has been almost a year since I've had ones that weren't previously frozen. I can't walk into my kitchen without grabbing a handful (or two) of these antioxidant powerhouses!

While we got a later start than I wanted and it got hot, we had a great time! The kid loves blueberries and couldn't wait until we got to the field. For those of you in the area, I highly recommend Berry Hill Farms. Even the little one enjoyed the day :)
The Environmental Working Group has recently come out with a new list for 2011 of the most contaminated produce. The EWG uses reports from the USDA to put this list together. There is a new one every year with slight variations, though many of the same foods appear every year with only a new position.

Why is this list important? Because not everyone can eat 100% organic, whether it be because of cost or location. This list allows you to steer clear of conventional produce that is highly contaminated. The EWG also puts out a 'Clean 15' list that has the top 15 least contaminated fruits and vegetables. It is reported that choosing produce from this list removes up to 93% of pesticides from your diet!

I know that I can't afford to buy all my produce organic, so I definitely try to keep this list in mind when I am shopping. While I don't really have to worry about vegetables this summer since I have my organic CSA, I still buy fruit every week. And if the price of organic is too much, or it simply isn't available as is the case for many stores around here, I simply choose an alternative that is not on the 'Dirty Dozen' list.

There is one more thing that is important to think about with this. Summer is now in full swing, which means that delicious and local produce is in full swing. Many local farmers use organic farming methods but are not certified by the USDA because it is a rather lengthy and expensive process that many can't afford. So while those delicious peaches down the road may not be "organic", it does not hurt to ask the growers about their farming methods.
I try to stick to this list, but what about you? If you can't find/can't afford the organic version, do you do without or buy it anyway?Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1461018067092015445.post-87999902397245720262011-06-28T08:00:00.000-04:002011-06-28T08:00:06.084-04:00Green Tip Tuesday

Clean your dryer filter!

In an ideal green world we would never use our dryers, but that is not most people's reality. As much as I would prefer to only let my laundry air dry someday, I still use it for towels and diapers right now because it just makes my life easier.

So because I still use it on a regular basis I want to ensure that I am using my dryer as efficiently as possible. The way I do this is making sure to clean the dryer filter often. This includes not only cleaning off the big globs of lint that accumulate (just one more reason I like to hang my clothes to dry!) after every load or two, but actually rinsing off the filter with water and even a little soap every six months. This helps get every bit of lint off and is especially important if you use dryer sheets because the oil from them can cause a film to build up on the screen.

Cleaning your screen regularly means that your laundry will dry faster, thus reducing your electricity costs. And since you will not have to run your dryer as much it will last longer. So lower electricity bills and a longer lasting dryer? Yes please!
I decided that I am going to try planning out our lunches this week. With the husband home from work for the next few weeks to help me out, lunches need to be more than whatever we can find to snack on. So maybe if I write it out I can make sure that we can be a little more prepared once lunchtime comes.
If you are the kind of crafter like I am, your craft room/space is terribly disorganized. I would love to have fancy and attractive organizers for all my things, but the budget just doesn't allow for that. So I have plastic totes and a couple plastic bins with drawers. I also have old plastic shoe boxes and cardboard boxes. But nothing special.

But I have found a solution to my problem. Sara at Prayer and Coupons was having the same problem so put together an awesome craft organizer out of cardboard boxes and a wooden dowel! Not only does this reuse what would otherwise be thrown away (or recycled, though still wasting resources), but it cost virtually nothing!

So go check it out and get inspired - I know I was!
Sunshine provides great lighting during the day and is free. I have heard of people who even make a sort of game out of seeing how long they can go during the day without turning on a single light. I try to do that as much as possible some days. Which is fine by the husband - he hates light!
Only a couple things are actually coming from the freezer this week because I feel great and love being in the kitchen. Except in the mornings. I really need to get my freezer restocked with breakfast items. Now if only I could teach the kid to get toast his own frozen waffle in the morning so I don't have to get out of bed...
While foods like this may not be the thriftiest or greenest way to go, they make for very convenient diaper bag (or purse...or glove compartment) snacks. They are also a cheaper and healthier option than other on-the-go snacks you could choose instead.
That's why I was excited to see that Little Birdie is offering a $30 voucher to Peeled Snacks for $15. Okay, they offered this same deal a couple months ago on another site and I opted out because I thought it was too much once you took shipping into account (you know I'm thrifty...). But if you are new to the Little Birdie site they will give you a $10 credit - making today's deal only $5! So for $5 plus another $7 for shipping, you get $30 worth of organic, dried fruit. I'm in!
So needless to say, posting will be light over the next couple weeks or so. I don't really need a menu plan this week, but maybe actually typing it out will remind me to take things out of the freezer (or rather telling the husband to take things out of the freezer).
All these meals (other than the salmon patties) will come from the freezer. I will leave it at 5 meals because I know that someone in our family will want to bring us food. But I still want to try to eat as real as possible over the next couple weeks...at least for main meals since I have more junk food in my house than I care to admit right now! Hey, I've been craving Froot Loops for weeks and dang it, I deserved them this weekend! : )
I just call it yummy. I haven't made this in a while but figured that since I was cooking up black beans for burgers this week I might as well put this pizza on the menu. As with any pizza it is easy to accommodate to your tastes and what you have in the house. I used ingredients I had on hand and urge you to do the same.

Fajita Pizza

pizza crust
3/4 - 1 cup refried beans or bean topping (recipe below)
shredded cheddar cheese (you do not need much at all if you want to cut back to save $$)
2 bell peppers, sliced
1/2 onion, sliced

1. Saute bell peppers and onions until soft.
2. Prepare crust. Prebake for 2-3 minutes.
3. Spread beans on crust. Add sauteed vegetables and shredded cheese.
4. Bake for 10-15 minutes until cheese is melted and crust is golden.
This recipe (which is really just a guideline or basic formula) is super versatile and easy to alter. You can add or subtract any of the vegetables based on what you currently have. Mushrooms are a pricier addition, but peas are cheap and delicious in this. I also like to add shelled edamame. You can also add in meat or change the amount of eggs. Sesame oil is good in this dish, but I used olive since that is what I had on hand. Fried rice is also a good use for leftover or batch cooked frozen rice.
This not only means temptation for you (these credit offers can be tempting!) but it means a lot of dead trees from all the wasted paper (and more mail for you to deal with/more trash in your trash can and shredder)!
Yes! Simply go to OptOutPreScreen.com. You fill out a form online and you can elect to either stop receiving offers for five years or permanently!
You do, of course, have to enter personal information, but the site is secure and legitimate. In fact, it is authorized by Equifax, Experian, Innovis and TransUnion. But if it makes you feel more comfortable, you only have to enter name and address (social security only helps to ensure you do not receive offers). The process is super quick (and painless) and a great way to help stop waste!

You may still receive offers from companies that do not compile their lists using Consumer Credit Reporting Companies, but this one little step can still make a big impact!

I just got done stuffing pocket diapers. Diapers that had been washed in the washing machine along with their inserts that had then been dried in the dryer. That must mean one thing: the handwashing challenge is over.

I must say that I am glad to be able to use my washing machine again, it just makes things much more convenient since there isn't much hands-on work involved. But did I hate the challenge? Not at all! Would I do it again if I needed to? Absolutely!

Actually washing the diapers was not bad at all but when it came time to rinse and wring, my sister and I both agree that a hand crank wringer like in the old days would make things much easier.

I have talked about my thoughts on the washing a few times so that is nothing new. Flats themselves were also nothing new to me. So let's talk about the real reason we took this challenge: low income families going without and reusing disposable diapers. This challenge was supposed to show that cloth diapering can be done without a lot of money or even a washer/dryer. Let's look at two aspects of this, cost and practicality.

Cost:

The cost can be as minimal as you want. You can make flats out of old clothes and sheets around the house. You can buy plastic or fleece pants as well as make your own fleece covers and pants. Or you can buy flour sack towels from Walmart for less than $1 a piece. You can buy a stash of cloth diapers for your child for less than $30, everything included. While nicer flats and covers must be bought online, those without internet access (or the means to purchase things over the internet) can still use flats.

Practicality:

Now what about the time factor? For stay-at-home parents it would seem as if this would be less of an issue. But several people wrote during the challenge about not being able to wash or having trouble because there was always someone screaming or needing something. But I think this is a problem that can be overcome by finding a more convenient time (wait? is there ever a convenient time for anything with kids?).

But what about single parents? Can you really expect a single mother working two jobs to wash diapers by hand in the little bit of time she has at home? In that case, washing diapers by hand may not be very practical. But what if it is either that or leave her child in a diaper for 12 hours during the day? What if it is wash by hand or not have money to feed her child? I would hope that if put in that situation, I would do the best thing for my child and wash cloth diapers by hand. It would not be easy or fun, but I would do it (I hope).

There are disposable diaper banks out there that thankfully help families in need, but the demand is much higher than the supply. So is there anything we can do to help? Yes, according to Kim at Dirty Diaper Laundry. Read her thoughts on the conclusion of the challenge to see how she says we (cloth diaper-ers, that is) can help.

Thrifty living is not for everyone (though everyone could stand to be a little more thrifty!) and it can take some hard work. But scratch cooking, clothes making, plastic baggie washing, and cloth diapering aside, the hardest part of being thrifty can actually be purely mental.

Many of us have ideas in our head of how we are supposed to live - big house, nice car (at least two if you are a married household), new clothes whenever you feel like it, nice dinners out a couple times a week...and the list goes on and on. I am not saying that any of these things is necessarily a bad thing if you can afford it and that is where your priorities are. But we shouldn't just expect that we should have these things and should instead accept the fact that we can't have everything in life. Just as we are told as kids - life isn't always fair!

No, scratch that last idea. We shouldn't just accept that we can't have something; that implies that we still want it and do not feel that what we have is adequate. Instead we should learn to be truly happy with less and with what we do have. This is a simple task, but again, it can be so difficult! We are almost trained by society today to place so much value on things and stuff. The result is us feeling like we have to have more of this and the latest of that in order to be important and valued as a person. We can sometimes feel like we are going to be looked down on and judged by others if we don't try to impress with our belongings.

And sometimes we will be. There will always be that person that tries to make someone else feel like less of a person for not having it all (and if you want me to go back to lessons learned as a child, these people may very likely be insecure themselves and trying to make themselves feel better by hurting others). But who really cares if we don't have everything? The answer is: not us and not anyone who truly cares about us!

So how do we become happy with less?

Stop comparing yourself to everyone else.

We all have different resources and priorities in life. And that is fine, even how it should be. Once you have decided what your priorities are and what you can and can't live without, stop looking around at the belongings other people have and the choices they make. In fact, don't even look at what they have when you are decided. Make your decisions based on what works for you and your family. I have made the decision to live with less stuff, but sometimes I catch myself thinking that I need more stuff because someone else around me has it. If I were to let this thought consume me it would end one of two ways: 1) I am going to be bitter that I don't have a house full of stuff; or 2) I am going to have a house full of stuff and an empty bank account and full garbage can (because stuff generally produces waste).

Look at what you do have.

For those who are religious, think of this as "counting your blessings." Though it may not seem that we have a lot, if you take the time, I bet you could come up with a huge list of things in your life that you do have. Make sure to include non-monetary items, such as health and a supportive family, as well as monetary items, such as shelter and transportation.

Change your wording.

Instead of thinking "this house isn't big enough," think "I am so happy I have a roof over my head." This kind of thinking will help you to appreciate what you came up with in #2.

Decide what you do need and forget about the rest.

There is a big difference between needs and wants. Learn to differentiate. Nobody in my household needs 20 different outfits. I also don't need 8 spatulas or a small appliance for every task in the kitchen. I used to always be rearranging closets and cabinets trying to find a better organizational method for all my stuff when it occurred to me that I didn't need more space, I needed less stuff. So now I am always looking for what I can get rid of and do without. While the throwing things out doesn't necessarily save me money, it does make me appreciate simplicity, which saves me from spending money later on when I do not need anything.

Get creative.

This goes along with #4. When a need does arise, take a look around at what you have to see if you can use something else in its place instead of immediately running to the store. You may want new baskets for storage in your home, but do you have boxes already that will work just as well? The same goes for activities and entertainment. You do not have to go to the movies every week or take your kids to an amusement park every weekend. Instead make your own fun, seeing just how much you can have without spending a dime.

If so, what did you do?
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1461018067092015445.post-31237701166587981682011-05-31T14:06:00.000-04:002011-05-31T14:06:15.186-04:00Green Tip Tuesday

Use scrap paper!

Do you write your meal plan down on a sheet of paper? What about your shopping list? Or reminders to yourself or others in your house? Instead of using a clean sheet of paper everytime, try using a piece of paper that would otherwise be thrown away.

A half doodled on sheet or the blank (or ad covered) part of the paper form a printable coupon work well. Envelopes we get in the mail also work great for scribbling notes on.

When I print things I often used already printed on sheets that I no longer need or ones that did not print how they should have. I of course don't do this if it is a paper I am giving to someone or need to look exceptionally nice for some other reason. But if I am just printing something like a recipe or pattern, I grab used paper first and simply print on the blank side.

Uvar _gaq = _gaq || [];
_gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-12284882-1']);
_gaq.push(['_trackPageview']);

var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(ga, s);

This small change isn't going to make you rich, but it will save you money. It also saves valuable resources. Not that is Green & Thrifty!
